Kerry: US, India need to tackle global warming

NEW DELHI (AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Sunday urged fast-growing India to work with the United States on global warming before it's too late. "The irreversible climate challenge is speeding towards us, crying out for a global solution, " he said.

Kerry spoke on climate change in a speech in New Delhi, the second stop on his two-week swing through the Mideast and Asia, just two days before President Barack Obama is to unveil his long-awaited plan for the United States on the issue.

"The world's largest democracy and its oldest one must do more together, uniting not as a threat to anyone, not as a counterweight to a region or some other countries, but as partners building a strong, smart future in a critical age," Kerry said in a reference to how India is often viewed as a counterbalance to China.

People consulting with White House officials on Obama's plan say they expect the president to put forth regulations on heat-trapping gases emitted by coal-fired power plants that are already running. Environmental groups have been pleading with Obama to take that step, but the administration has said it's focused first on controls on new power plants.

More than half of India's power comes from coal and while the U.S. has emission issues of its own, it wants to see India and other nations in the region rely less on old, coal generation facilities. The U.S. is backing a Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India pipeline that would bring energy to a power-starved region.

Speaking at a convention center to a crowd of several hundred businessmen, students and others, Kerry noted that federal scientists in May reported that the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere passed 400 parts per million ? a level never before experienced by man.

"When the desert is creeping into East Africa, and ever more scarce resources push farmers and herders into deadly conflict ... then this is a matter of shared security for all of us. ... When the Himalayan glaciers are receding, threatening the very supply of water to almost a billion people, we all need to do better," he said.

During his first trip to India as secretary of state, the top U.S. diplomat was expected to discuss a myriad of other topics, including enhancing security in the region and prospects for finding a political resolution to the war in Afghanistan.

As NATO troops leave, India fears the country could fall into the hands of a Taliban-led regime, endangering many of India's interests there. Kerry reassured India, which has invested more than $2 billion to reconstruct Afghanistan, that the U.S. commitment to the Afghan people will not end at the close of next year when NATO-led combat troops complete their withdrawal.

In meetings before Kerry heads to Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, the U.S. expects Indian officials will want to query Kerry about prospects for peace talks with the Taliban. U.S. talks were scheduled to begin in coming days, but a last-minute diplomatic rift over how the Taliban rolled out their new political office in Doha, Qatar, has threatened to scuttle the talks.

"Obviously, we are very realistic about the difficulties of making progress. Making peace is never easy, and a final settlement may be long in coming," he said.

"And let me be clear: Any political settlement must result in the Taliban breaking ties with al-Qaida, renouncing violence and accepting the Afghan constitution, including its protections for all Afghans, women and men. Afghanistan cannot again become a safe haven for international terrorism."

Kerry also spoke about India's archrival, Pakistan.

There is widespread hope that Pakistan's new President Nawaz Sharif will try to improve relations with its Indian neighbor, thus reducing the chance of a fourth major war between the nuclear-armed foes.

But India has been frustrated by Pakistan's failure to crack down on Islamic extremists, which have strong historical links with Pakistani intelligence. Kerry called on Pakistan to continue normalizing trade relations with Pakistan. "Just last year, bilateral trade increased 21 percent," he said.

Washington wants New Delhi to speed up economic reform to increase U.S. business and trade opportunities with India. In the past decade, bilateral trade has increased five-fold, but Kerry is expected to share the concerns of the U.S. business community about trade and about other problems American businessmen are facing in India.

More than 150 U.S. lawmakers teamed up with American business groups last week to press the Obama administration to further press India to ease policies they claim are bad for American exports, jobs and innovation.

10 most monstrous tag teams

Professional wrestling has always been filled with hulking masses of humanity, doing battle to establish their supremacy over the competition. However, some titans towered over even the biggest Superstars.

Sometimes, these giants of the squared circle teamed up, resulting in complete devastation. Like the beasts that rise from the ocean in Guillermo Del Toro?s thriller ?Pacific Rim,? these gargantuan grapplers left nothing but destruction in their paths. The carnage they caused seemed like something out of a monster movie, but for their opponents, it was very, very real and extremely painful.

Britain's Osborne reaches deal on spending cuts

By Peter Griffiths

LONDON (Reuters) - Chancellor George Osborne completed talks on Sunday with government departments aimed at securing spending cuts worth 11.5 billion pounds in 2015-16 to help reduce the country's budget deficit, the Treasury said.

The finance ministry said it had reached agreement with all departments, three days before Osborne is due to publish details of their spending limits on June 26.

The talks to find spending cuts starting in 2015 - when voters go to the polls - posed a political headache for Osborne, particularly over the sensitive defence budget and a business department under pressure to do more to revive the economy.

Osborne, who announced the end of the talks on Twitter, will now seek to persuade voters that he has a credible plan to build on recent signs that the economy is gaining strength after two years of stagnation.

He is expected to give more details on Wednesday of billions of pounds of infrastructure spending designed to bolster the recovery.

"We have completed the spending round savings early and without all the arguments you normally get," a Treasury spokesman said. "This shows our determination to take the tough decisions needed to deliver our economic plan and to turn Britain around."

Osborne said earlier that the budget deficit was still too high and he was committed to trying to reduce borrowing and cutting the deficit.

"We are out of intensive care and our job now is to secure the recovery," Osborne told BBC television. "There certainly is a chance of a relapse if we abandon our economic plan."

Britain's Conservative-led coalition government is sticking with its central economic policy of reducing a deficit that peaked at more than 11 percent of gross domestic product before it came to power in May 2010.

Despite tax rises and spending cuts, public borrowing has remained stubbornly high over the past year, and data on Friday showed public net debt climbed to record levels in May.

DEFENCE DEAL

A deal was reached with the defence department on Saturday, Osborne said, ending what analysts saw as one of the most difficult sets of negotiations.

General Peter Wall, the head of the army, said last week that more cuts would seriously damage the country's chances of success in future wars.

Osborne said the defence deal would see cuts to civilian staff numbers, while protecting Britain's military capability.

Agreement was only reached on Sunday with the business department, run by Vince Cable, a senior member of the Lib Dems, the government's junior coalition partner.

Labour, which leads the Conservatives by around 10 points in the polls with the next election due to be held in 2015, accuses the coalition of choking the recovery with its austerity drive.

Labour finance spokesman Ed Balls said he would adopt Osborne's day-to-day spending limits for 2015-16 if his party wins the election. However, he wanted the coalition to spend 10 billion pounds more on capital projects.

Balls said he would be prepared to borrow more to finance extra capital expenditure, an admission junior Conservative finance minister Sajid Javid held up as evidence that Labour couldn't be trusted to balance the books.

"If George Osborne had done that last year or the year before, we wouldn't have had such a flatlining economy," Balls said.

Parents who sued Apple over in-app purchases can now claim compensation

Parents who sued Apple over inapp purchases can now claim compensation

Apple's dedicated "in-app purchases litigation administrator" has had a busy few days. According to CNET, he or she has been emailing some important news to the 23 million parents who've been involved in a long-running class action lawsuit over in-app purchases racked up by their kids. The email says that individual claims for compensation can now be sent to Cupertino as per the terms of the original settlement back in February. Disputed transactions under $30 will qualify for a nominal $5 iTunes voucher, while bigger bills may be fully refunded in cash -- but only for strings of purchases made within 45 days of each other, back when there were no repeat password requests or disclaimers to get in a seven-year-old's way. There's a deadline of January 13th, 2014 for at least some types of claim, by which point Apple's litigation administrator may well find themselves diverted to another urgent case.

Turkish police break up protest, PM lambasts opponents

By Daren Butler and Nick Tattersall

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkish riot police fired water cannon to disperse thousands of anti-government demonstrators in Istanbul on Saturday, as Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan castigated those behind protests he said had played into the hands of Turkey's enemies.

The latest unrest in Taksim Square punctured six days of relative calm in Turkey's biggest city, although it was a long way from matching the ferocity of previous clashes there and in other cities that began more than three weeks ago.

Demonstrators threw carnations at a phalanx of officers carrying shields who slowly advanced towards them, flanked by water cannon, to clear the square.

"Police, don't betray your people!" activists shouted after they had been scattered into streets leading to Taksim. Witnesses said police also used teargas to disperse protesters in nearby streets in cat-and-mouse clashes.

In the capital Ankara, riot police fired water cannon and teargas to break up hundreds of protesters, some of them shouting anti-Erdogan slogans, and at one location they built barricades to block a main street, according to witnesses.

Earlier, Erdogan told thousands of supporters in the Black Sea city of Samsun that the unrest played into the hands of Turkey's enemies.

A crowd of some 15,000 of his AK Party faithful cheered and waved Turkish flags as he called on the public to give their answer to demonstrations at the ballot box when Turkey holds municipal elections next March.

The rally in the party stronghold was the fourth in a series of mass meetings which Erdogan has called since protests began in Istanbul at the start of June in an unprecedented challenge on the streets to his 10-year rule.

The unrest was triggered when police used force against campaigners opposed to plans to develop Gezi Park which adjoins Taksim Square, but they quickly turned into a broader show of anger at what critics call Erdogan's growing authoritarianism.

The blunt-talking 59-year-old, who has led Turkey through an economic boom and still enjoys broad popular support, went on the offensive again, saying an "interest rate lobby" of speculators in financial markets had benefited from the unrest.

"Who won from these three weeks of protests? The interest rate lobby, Turkey's enemies," Erdogan said from a stage emblazoned with his portrait and a slogan calling for his supporters to "thwart the big game" played out against Turkey.

"Who lost from these protests? Turkey's economy, even if to a small extent, tourism lost. They overshadowed and stained Turkey's image and international power," he said.

SOCIAL DIVISIONS

In a speech appealing to conservative grassroots support, Erdogan accused those involved in the protests in Turkey's main western cities of being disrespectful towards Islam, the religion of the vast majority of the population of 76 million.

"Let them go into mosques in their shoes, let them drink alcohol in our mosques, let them raise their hand to our headscarved girls. One prayer from our people is enough to frustrate their plans," Erdogan said, before tossing red carnations to the crowd after his speech.

The protests have underlined divisions in Turkish society between religious conservatives who form the bedrock of Erdogan's support and more liberal Turks who have swelled the ranks of demonstrators.

Erdogan, who won a third consecutive election in 2011 with 50 percent support, sees himself as a champion of democratic reform, and has been riled by the protests and by international condemnation coming mainly from key trade partner Germany.

During his decade in power, which has seen him unchallenged on the political stage, Erdogan has curbed the powers of an army that toppled four governments in four decades and pursued an end to 30 years of Kurdish rebellion.

But he brooks little dissent.

Hundreds of military officers have been jailed on charges of plotting a coup against him.

A court near Istanbul is due to announce on August 5 its verdict on nearly 300 defendants, including academics, journalists and politicians, accused of separate plots to overthrow the government.

On Sunday, Erdogan will address a rally in the eastern city of Erzurum, also an AK Party stronghold.

Hong Kong says Snowden has left for third country

HONG KONG (AP) ? A former National Security Agency contractor wanted by the United States for revealing two highly classified surveillance programs has left for a "third country," the Hong Kong government said Sunday.

A statement from the government did not identify the country, but the South China Morning Post, which has been in contact with Edward Snowden, reported that he was on a plane for Moscow, but that Russia was not his final destination.

Snowden, who has been in hiding in Hong Kong for several weeks since he revealed information on the highly classified spy programs, has talked of seeking asylum in Iceland.

His departure came a day after the United States made a formal request for his extradition and warned Hong Kong against delaying the process of returning him to face trial in the U.S.

The Hong Kong government said Snowden left "on his own accord for a third country through a lawful and normal channel."

It acknowledged the U.S. extradition request, but said U.S. documentation did "fully comply with the legal requirements under Hong Kong law." It said additional information was requested from Washington, but since the Hong Kong government "has yet to have sufficient information to process the request for provisional warrant of arrest, there is no legal basis to restrict Mr. Snowden from leaving Hong Kong."

The statement said Hong Kong had informed the U.S. of Snowden's departure. It added that it wanted more information about alleged hacking of computer systems in Hong Kong by U.S. government agencies which Snowden had revealed.

Snowden's departure eliminates a possible fight between Washington and Beijing at a time when China is trying to deflect U.S. accusations that it carries out extensive surveillance of American government and commercial operations. Hong Kong, a former British colony, has a high degree of autonomy and is granted rights and freedoms not seen on mainland China, but under the city's mini constitution Beijing is allowed to intervene in matters involving defense and diplomatic affairs.

Hong Kong has an extradition treaty with the U.S., but the document has some exceptions, including for crimes deemed political.

The Obama administration on Saturday warned Hong Kong against delaying Snowden's extradition, with White House national security adviser Tom Donilon saying in an interview with CBS News, "Hong Kong has been a historically good partner of the United States in law enforcement matters, and we expect them to comply with the treaty in this case."

Snowden's departure came as the South China Morning Post released new allegations from Snowden that U.S. hacking targets in China included the nation's cellphone companies and two universities hosting extensive Internet traffic hubs.

He told the newspaper that "the NSA does all kinds of things like hack Chinese cellphone companies to steal all of your SMS data." It added that Snowden said he had documents to support the hacking allegations, but the report did not identify the documents. It said he spoke to the newspaper in a June 12 interview.

With a population of more than 1.3 billion, China has massive cellphone companies. China Mobile is the world's largest mobile network carrier with 735 million subscribers, followed by China Unicom with 258 million users and China Telecom with 172 million users.

Snowden said Tsinghua University in Beijing and Chinese University in Hong Kong, home of some of the country's major Internet traffic hubs, were targets of extensive hacking by U.S. spies this year. He said the NSA was focusing on so-called "network backbones" in China, through which enormous amounts of Internet data passes.

The Chinese government has not commented on the extradition request and Snowden's departure, but its state-run media have used Snowden's allegations to poke back at Washington after the U.S. had spent the past several months pressuring China on its international spying operations.

A commentary published Sunday by the official Xinhua News Agency said Snowden's disclosures of U.S. spying activities in China have "put Washington in a really awkward situation."

"Washington should come clean about its record first. It owes ... an explanation to China and other countries it has allegedly spied on," it said. "It has to share with the world the range, extent and intent of its clandestine hacking programs."

'Mad Men' stars in not-so-'60s roles

TV

They look sleek, sexy and dapper in their 1960s finery, but the cast of "Mad Men" isn't always so polished. In fact, sometimes when the stars who bring Don Draper, Roger Sterling and the rest of the characters to life aren't playing the roles they're most famous for, they're barely recognizable.

Before you say "so long" to the Sterling Cooper & Partners gang for the season on Sunday night, take a look at our roundup of some of the (not-so-) familiar faces.

Image: Jon Hamm as Don Draper on "Mad Men" and Abner on "30 Rock."

AMC / NBC

Jon Hamm as Don Draper on "Mad Men" and Abner on "30 Rock."

Don Draper's made some serious mistakes on "Mad Men" this season, but thankfully, the look on the right isn't one of them. No, that's just John Hamm spoofing old-timey, distasteful comedies in an "Alfie and Abner" skit from a live episode of "30 Rock."

Image: John Slattery as Roger Sterling on "Mad Men" and Dr. Norman on "Arrested Development."

AMC / Netflix

John Slattery as Roger Sterling on "Mad Men" and Dr. Norman on "Arrested Development."

If it looks like Roger Sterling has seen better days in the second shot, that's because the actor who plays him, John Slattery, took on the part of a washed up, dirty doctor in the recent return of "Arrested Development."

Image: Elisabeth Moss as Peggy Olson on "Mad Men" and Cynthia Parks on "Picket Fences."

AMC / CBS

Elisabeth Moss as Peggy Olson on "Mad Men" and Cynthia Parks on "Picket Fences."

Peggy Olson's grown into quite the copywriter at Sterling Cooper & Partners, but way before that, actress Elisabeth Moss hit the small screen when she was still small. She made her first appearance in the quirky dramedy "Picket Fences" in 1992.

Image: Vincent Kartheiser as Pete Campbell on "Mad Men" and Connor on "Angel."

AMC / 20th Century Television

Vincent Kartheiser as Pete Campbell on "Mad Men" and Connor on "Angel."

Even Pete Campbell -- or rather Vincent Kartheiser -- had a fresh-faced look on TV back in the day. Long before joining "Mad Men," Kartheiser played Connor, the non-vamp son of the fang-bearing lead, on "Angel."

Image: Christina Hendricks as Joan Harris on "Mad Men" and Saffron on "Firefly."

AMC / FOX

Christina Hendricks as Joan Harris on "Mad Men" and Saffron on "Firefly."

If you're a fan of Joan Harris' just-so hair, tailored dresses and crimson lipstick, then Christina Hendricks' turn on "Firefly" might not interest you. But if you want to see Hendricks' range (and don't mind seeing her in far fewer clothes), then be sure to catch both of her decade-old episodes.

Image: Jessica Pare as Megan Draper on "Mad Men" and Jennifer on "Suck."

AMC / Capri Films

Jessica Pare as Megan Draper on "Mad Men" and Jennifer on "Suck."

Yikes! Megan Draper goes from Don's secretary to wife on "Mad Men," but actress Jessica Pare went from alive to undead in the movie "Suck."

Image: Alison Brie as Trudy Campbell on "Mad Men" and Annie Edison on "Community."

AMC / NBC

Alison Brie as Trudy Campbell on "Mad Men" and Annie Edison on "Community."

When actress Alison Brie isn't playing the part of Pete's long-suffering wife, Trudy Campbell, she's laughing it up as the brainy and beautiful Annie on the sitcom "Community."

Image: Jared Harris as Lane Pryce on "Mad Men" and Moriarty in "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows."

AMC / Warner Bros. Pictures

Jared Harris as Lane Pryce on "Mad Men" and Moriarty in "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows."

Rest in peace, Lane Pryce. Fans of the fallen character can see actor Jared Harris back in action in the 2011 film "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows," playing the ultimate match for the sleuth -- the devious Professor Moriarty.

The season six finale of "Mad Men" airs Sunday at 10 p.m. on AMC.

How To Appeal Your Idaho Property Tax Bill - Front Street Brokers

Taxation How To Appeal Your Idaho Property Tax Bill

June 24th, 2013 (Monday) is the deadline to submit your appeal for your property tax assessments for 2013. ?If you are an Idaho Property owner you were mailed a valuation of your home in late May, early June, based on January 1st of the year. ?This assessment of value from the county assessor?s office can change every year based how home values are doing in your neighborhood.

Since home prices are on the rise in many locations across the state, you should look at this tax assessment closely. If you feel the value they have place on your home is too low, then do nothing and keep quite about it (enjoy it while it lasts). ?However, if your home is being over valued then you have the right and ability to call your tax assessor?s office talk to them about your assessment.

HOW TO APPEAL YOUR IDAHO TAX ASSESSMENT

1. ?Contact your favorite, knowledgeable real estate agent, and have them do a quick check on value of your home based on Jan 1st of the year. ?Many agents make the mistake of showing the value today, but the assessor?s office is trying to prove value as of Jan 1st, and therefore will not accept comps selling today.

2. ?If your realtor can show you proof that your home is indeed, being over assessed then you should call your tax assessors office right away. ?The number to call is right on your tax assessment. ?Share with them the findings from your Realtor. ?Remember that home valuations are subjective. ?It depends a lot on which comps are being used to determine value. ?If the tax assessor shares with you comps that your realtor did not show you, then make a note of that, because your agent will need that property info to see if they can dispute those comps for any reason.

If you provide compelling evidence for the tax appraiser, and they agree with the over assessment, then they have the ability to make a change right then and there if they agree with the information you have presented. ?However, if you are not that lucky, and they don?t agree to change your valuation, hope is not lost. ?

3. ?In the State of Idaho, you can file an Appeal against your property assessment. ?The process is not difficult, but there is a deadline. ?You must submit your appeal by the 4th Monday in June (June 24th, 2013!). ?Call the assessors office as ask for the form. ?Some county assessors offices have the form on their website where you can download it. Here is a link to Ada County Appeal Form?or just got their website: http://AdaWeb.net. This will establish a court date when you will have an opportunity to further make your case. ?Be sure to lean on your favorite realtor for plenty of documentation to support your claim. ?If your home is being drastically over assessed this will be worth it. ?If is just marginally over assessed then it is probably not worth the fight.

You only have one time a year when you can appeal your property tax assessments, so make sure you don?t get caught off guard. ?Also, this process only addresses property assessments, not property tax amounts. ?Your home assessment is calculated into your tax levy. ?Your tax levy is determine by the tax districts and county commissioners. ?Each county has multiple tax districts and meetings throughout the summer where the tax levy?s are discussed and determined. ?You have the right to attend and speak at these meetings, so if you are concerned about something, attend and speak up.

If you have more questions about property taxes, or need market assessment on your home. Just call me at 208-340-8399.

Kane scores, Blackhawks lead Bruins 1-0 in Game 5

CHICAGO (AP) ? Patrick Kane scored his eighth goal of the postseason, and the Chicago Blackhawks led the Boston Bruins 1-0 through the first period in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup finals on Saturday night.

In a thrilling series that's seen only one game decided in regulation and was knotted at 2-all, the Blackhawks broke through in this one after both teams missed several chances in the early going. They grabbed the lead with 2:33 left in the period after a shot by Johnny Oduya closing in from the left point ricocheted off the stick of Boston defenseman Dennis Seidenberg.

Kane, who was to the left of the net, picked up the spinning puck and tucked it past Tuukka Rask into the lower left corner of the net. All that happened after Jonathan Toews muscled past Milan Lucic to carry the puck deep into the Boston zone.

Corey Crawford did his job in goal for Chicago with 11 saves after getting beaten five times to his glove side during Wednesday's 6-5 overtime victory.

Rask stopped seven of the eight shots he faced.

Boston outhit Chicago 23-9 in the period even though the Blackhawks indicated they would go right at the Bruins' Zdeno Chara, just as they did in Game 4. David Krejci had four of those hits.

Toews hit the post just under four minutes into the game, and Boston's Nathan Horton hit the crossbar right after that.

The Bruins had another chance midway through the first period when Jaromir Jagr came out of a scrum along the boards but got stopped from the edge of the crease.

Rask spread out and made a neat save with his chest or shoulder late in the period to stop a shot by Patrick Sharp closing in from the left circle.

Marian Hossa was in the lineup for Chicago as expected after missing the morning skate and practice on Friday. He was scratched from Game 3 because of an upper body injury but did play in Game 4. The Bruins also had center Carl Soderberg in the lineup over Kaspars Daugavins, another adjustment during arguably the wildest final in years.

Both teams have been doing whatever they can to get an edge, whether it was Chicago pairing Toews and Kane on the same line in Game 4 or Boston teaming Chris Kelly, Daniel Paille and Tyler Seguin in Game 2.

It had been 20 years since a championship series had at least three games go to overtime, and this is just the sixth time since 1927 it has happened. The only other final to feature more OT games during that stretch was when Toronto and Montreal played five in 1951.

Teams that have won Game 5 after splitting the first four have gone on to win the championship 15 of 22 times since the league went to a best-of-seven format in 1939. But in recent years, the pattern has not held. The Game 5 loser in that scenario has won the championship four of the past six times, with Boston taking out Vancouver in 2011.

G-rated films are a tough sell in superhero era

Movies

Two family-aimed films are hitting theaters in the next two weeks. "Monsters University" is an animated 3-D movie about zany, friendly monsters -- one with just one eyeball -- and how they interact with humans. (Spoiler: They scare them.) "Despicable Me 2" is also an animated 3-D movie about zany, friendly monsters -- some with just one eyeball -- and how they interact with humans. (Spoiler: They work for them.)

IMAGE: "Monsters University," "Despicable Me 2"

Disney, Universal

That's Mike from "Monsters University" on the left, and a minion from "Despicable Me 2" on the right. Can you tell which movie is rated G and which PG?

From that description, is it immediately clear which film is rated G, for General Audiences, and which one PG, meaning Parental Guidance suggested?

If it's not clear to you ("Monsters University" gets the G), you're not alone.

"I do think there is less of a clear line between G and PG than there is between PG-13 and R," said Vincent Bruzzese, chief executive officer of the Worldwide Motion Picture Group, a consultancy serving the entertainment industry. "It's very clear what makes something an R. If you say the F-word X number of times, it's an R. But why are 'Cars 2' and 'Rio' G, and yet 'Madagascar' or 'The Lorax' PG? What is the difference there? I'm not sure."

The Motion Picture Association of America, which determines movie ratings, did not respond to a request for comment for this story.

Bruzzese's company's research shows that not only do many parents not understand what makes a movie a G, to some of them, that family-friendly rating might even be a deterrent, especially if they have older children.

"We actually see that parents have no problem taking (5- or 6-year-olds) to a PG movie," Bruzzese said. "But they'll have trouble getting their 10- or 12-year-old to go to a G movie."

And if parents do want to seek out a G movie, good luck. Many movies that sound like they should be rated G tend to get the older rating. May's animated "Epic," about a girl who's shrunk to the size of a bug and helps a race known as the Leaf Men, was rated PG for "mild action, some scary images and brief rude language." July release "Turbo," about a garden snail who dreams of winning the Indy 500, is rated PG. (Does the snail swear?) August sequel "The Smurfs 2" isn't yet rated, but it'll almost certainly be PG like the 2011 original.

"The G rating has all but disappeared from theatrical releases other than one or two animated films each year," said Nell Minow, who advises parents about movies as The Movie Mom. "It's all about money. School-age kids think that G-rated movies are 'babyish,' so only Disney can get away with it."

With so much movie information available online, today's parents today don't need to rely only on the MPAA ratings. "(Parents) do their own investigation of films," Bruzzese said. "They're able to go online and look up -- whether it's user comments or more about the plot, more scenes -- they're able to find enough information to give them that (knowledge)."

Ben Boychuk of Rialto, Calif., is one of those parents. "I don't have a hard-and-fast rule about MPAA ratings," said Boychuk, who has an 11-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter. "I'll make a judgment based on whether I've seen the movie or barring that, by researching reviews and audience comments. IMDb is an invaluable resource -- what the Internet was meant for."

Wondering what has shifted since the days when kids saw only G-rated films? Experts point to many changes, including the addition of the PG-13 rating in 1984, the availability of movies of all ratings on home video and cable television, and the emergence of a generation of parents who grew up with such kid-tempting action films as 1977's "Star Wars." But a web-slinging, wall-crawling hero in tights might have something to do with it too.

"The family audience clearly has evolved in that it really, really started way back with the original 'Spider-Man' with Tobey Maguire," said Bruzzese. The 2002 PG-13-rated blockbuster "brought in a family audience to what would traditionally have been an older-skewing movie," he said.

Now, he said, "Today's 10-year-old is seeing what a 15-year-old would have seen 10 or 15 years ago."

Boychuk's family is a perfect example. Son Benjamin saw Maguire's "Spider-Man" on DVD at age 4 or 5. "He watched it at least a dozen times," Boychuk said. "The Green Goblin frightened him at first, but he wanted to see the movie again as soon as it was over."

But Boychuk notes that parents need to know their own children, who may be ready for different films at different ages. "My son was always great in movie theaters," he said. "My daughter (Isabella) is a different story. She can't handle most scary stuff, though she loves the classic Disney movies. ... I tend to be more vigilant with what we let her watch."

And the MPAA rating might not be the ultimate determining factor in how frightening a movie really is. In 2011, when TODAY.com asked readers to name the scariest scene in children's films, a scene from G-rated "Toy Story 3" repeatedly popped up. In it, Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the other toys are on what seems like an unstoppable moving ramp pushing them into a giant incinerator, with flames leaping high.

"As I think about it now, Bella was freaked out by the incinerator scene -- and so was I!" Boychuk said. "But Benjamin wasn't bothered too much."

The G rating will almost certainly continue to shift in meaning and usage, Bruzzese believes.

"If you look at the last 10 G-rated movies, half are either concerts or documentaries," he said. "More and more, as that becomes prevalent, the G rating will stand for not just the 'Winnie the Poohs' of the world, but will stand for things like (Disneynature 2012 documentary) 'Chimpanzee' or IMAX or a concert show. The G might start standing for non-traditional movie entertainment that's not offensive to any age group, whereas PG becomes the new G."

(AP) ? A fast-moving line of storms barreled across the northern Plains and Upper Midwest Friday evening, killing a woman in her trailer on a South Dakota lake and leaving thousands of people without power.

Hamlin County Sheriff Chad Schlotterbeck said the 63-year-old woman was hunkered down in the bathtub in her trailer on the east side of Lake Poinsett when a storm lifted the structure and dropped it to the ground. Schlotterbeck said the entire county of about 6,000 residents was without power Friday evening, and the fire department was going door to door to assess the extent of damage.

"We've got homes destroyed," he said.

The sheriff's office was waiting to release the woman's name until it could notify relatives. A man in his 60s was also injured in the storms, and another man was hospitalized from an electrical shock, Schlotterbeck said.

The National Weather Service said it received reports of tornadoes touching down in Clark, Hamlin, Spink and Kingsbury counties, as well as strong winds and golf-ball-sized hail. The storms later moved into Minnesota and Wisconsin, bringing heavy rain and damaging winds.

Some of the most notable damage from the storms occurred around Lake Poinsett, which is in northeast South Dakota and is home to numerous summer cabins. Jim Scarlett, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Aberdeen, said the damage was likely caused by a tornado, but the office was still assessing what happened.

Randy Knudtson was standing on the side of the road across from his cabin along Lake Poinsett when the storm moved in.

"It was completely black on the tree horizon and then in less than five minutes all of the sudden it was right on top of us," said Knudtson, 64. "I've never seen winds like this."

Knudtson went inside and huddled in the cabin's laundry room with his wife, daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren. The storm tossed around some of his neighbors' docks, pontoon boats and boat lifts, but his cabin was spared.

Scarlett said there were also reports of heavy wind damage around Castlewood and in Deuel County near Clear Lake.

"The town of Clear Lake just got devastated with wind damage," he said.

The winds blew down trees and branches in several areas, and heavy rain caused some street flooding.

In Wisconsin, a trained spotter measured 1.48 inches of rain in a 40-minute period in Hudson in St. Croix County, the National Weather Service said.

In Minnesota, the storms blew through the Twin Cities area less than 24 hours after damaging winds and heavy rain uprooted trees and knocked out power to more than 157,000 customers.

Hennepin County Emergency Management Director Eric Waage said he saw "quite a few large trees down" as he surveyed damage from the latest storm.

"Almost everywhere I've driven has been out of power," Waage said Friday night. He said he had not received any reports of injuries.

A wind gust measuring 69 mph was reported just before 8 p.m. in suburban Crystal, the weather service said.

Amanda Viacara, bar manager at Chino Latino restaurant in Minneapolis, said the sky darkened and "the winds started coming in sideways." She said the rain "was moving from side to side," sending "a lot of people scurrying for cover."

"We had a lot of people that just decided to sit and relax and enjoy the inside (of the restaurant)," Viacara said.

Sleep deprivation in teens linked to poor dietary choices

June 20, 2013 ? Well-rested teenagers tend to make more healthful food choices than their sleep-deprived peers, according to a study led by Lauren Hale, PhD, Associate Professor of Preventive Medicine at Stony Brook University School of Medicine. The finding, presented at SLEEP 2013, the annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies, may be key to understanding the link between sleep and obesity.

"Not only do sleepy teens on average eat more food that's bad for them, they also eat less food that is good for them," said Dr. Hale, speaking about the study results. "While we already know that sleep duration is associated with a range of health consequences, this study speaks to some of the mechanisms, i.e., nutrition and decision making, through which health outcomes are affected."

The study, which was supported by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, examined the association between sleep duration and food choices in a national representative sample of 13,284 teenagers in the second wave of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. The data were collected in 1996 when the interview subjects had a mean age of 16 years.

The authors found that those teens who reported sleeping fewer than seven hours per night -- 18 percent of respondents -- were more likely to consume fast food two or more times per week and less likely to eat healthful food such as fruits and vegetables. The results took into account factors such as age, gender, race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, physical activity and family structure, and found that short sleep duration had an independent effect on both healthy and unhealthy food choices.

The respondents fell into one of three categories: short sleepers, who received fewer than seven hours per night; mid-range sleepers, who had seven to eight hours per night; and recommended sleepers, who received more than eight hours per night. The American Academy of Pediatrics currently recommends that adolescents get between nine and 10 hours of sleep per night.

"We are interested in the association between sleep duration and food choices in teenagers because adolescence is a critical developmental period between childhood and adulthood," said the first author of the study, Allison Kruger, MPH, a community health worker at Stony Brook University Hospital. "Teenagers have a fair amount of control over their food and sleep, and the habits they form in adolescence can strongly impact their habits as adults."

The research team -- which included co-authors Eric N. Reither, PhD, Utah State University; Patrick Krueger, PhD, University of Colorado at Denver; and Paul E. Peppard, PhD, University of Wisconsin-Madison -- concluded that addressing sleep deficiency may be a novel and effective way to improve obesity prevention and health promotion interventions.

Dr. Hale said that one of the next steps in the research will be to explore whether the association between sleep duration and food choices is causal.

"If we determine that there is a causal link between chronic sleep and poor dietary choices, then we need to start thinking about how to more actively incorporate sleep hygiene education into obesity prevention and health promotion interventions," she said.

Five things to understand about Turkey's protests

Protesters use a large Turkish flag to protect themselves from water released by riot police to disperse the crowd during an antigovernment protest at Taksim Square in central Istanbul May 31. (Osman Orsal/Reuters)

Nationwide protests grew out of a violent police response on May 31 to a peaceful sit-in to protect Istanbul?s Gezi Park from commercial development. The excessive force used by police ignited a widespread demonstration that quickly evolved into a broader protest against what activists say is Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan?s authoritarian style of leadership.

In 2011, Mr. Erdogan won reelection with 50 percent of the vote. Since then he and his Justice and Development Party (AKP) have pursued a number of conservative policies, such as restricting the marketing and sale of alcohol and increased Internet censorship. Those outside AKP accuse the prime minister of doing away with consensus building, and ignoring the other half of the country.

Erdogan remains dismissive of the protesters and their demands, blaming the unrest largely on outside instigators. His unwillingness to compromise combined with the extreme police response has tapped into frustrations that have been stewing under the surface for several years and fomented massive nationwide demonstrations.

Forty members of the Dallas Pops Orchestra, as well as 10 members of the Cirque Orchestra, will provide the music.

Veronica Nan, a classical violinist won?t be in the orchestra, she?ll be hanging above it.? ?Aside from the challenge from hanging in a chandelier you have to play one of the hardest violin pieces ever written, the Tchaikovsky violin concerto in front of an orchestra and have nothing under your feet,? she said.

UCLA coach Steve Alford enjoys homecoming at Franklin College basketball camp

FRANKLIN, Ind. -- UCLA coach Steve Alford fit right in Wednesday at Franklin College.

Instead of walking into the annual summer basketball camp wearing his traditional red attire, Alford dressed in a blue-and-gold T-shirt that was just a few shades short of matching Franklin's school colors. Heck, even the school nicknames, Bruins and Grizzlies, both represent bears.

And, of course, he enjoys being around a community where he is still so revered that the Division III school sold out every spot for this week's event.

"It's always fun. This is the fifth different coaching job I've had and at every spot I've had at least one Indiana guy," Alford said during a mid-afternoon break. "I still recruit this area."

Taking the UCLA basketball coaching job has not prevented Steve Alford from returning to the hospital where he was born and the community where his father, Sam, once coached. For Alford it was an opportunity to feel like he was back home in Indiana. (AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes, File)

For Alford, it's a rare break from the day-to-day responsibilities of monitoring his new players' progress, tracking recruits, meeting with a new staff and getting players acclimated to doing things his way.

Here, he's working with roughly 200 boys and girls in grades one through six, most of whom know his name but have only learned his resume through their parents: 1984 Olympic gold medalist as a teammate of Michael Jordan, leader of Indiana's last national championship team (1987), second-round NBA draft pick and now the head coach of one of America's most prestigious basketball programs.

"Are you going to be on TV?" one young child wearing a Bruins baseball cap asked after seeing Alford finish an interview.

If all goes well in Los Angeles, he'll be a regular on the airwaves.

Usually, his annual homecoming is a family affair. This time, though, his wife and children stayed in Los Angeles as they adjust to big city life while Alford came back to this small town, located about 25 miles from downtown Indianapolis and not far from the corn fields that dominate the landscape south of Indy.

Why here? It's home.

His father, Sam, played basketball at Franklin and was an assistant coach at Franklin High School. The campus is located just a few miles from the hospital where Alford was born and only a couple dozen miles from the hometown of another Indiana basketball star with UCLA connections, John Wooden. When camp ends, at 4 p.m. each day, Alford can make the short drive to his parents' lake house, and over the last 27 years, he's worked this camp at different times with his father and two sons, Kory and Bryce.

This time is different. During a lunch break Wednesday, Alford attended a dedication ceremony for Johnson Memorial Hospital's new reflection garden. It honored Alford, perhaps the city's most famous son, with a special brick that the son says was more the result of his mother and father than anything he did. Then it was back to work in a familiar venue.

"We think about it more like a family thing than that," Franklin athletic director and basketball coach Kerry Prather said when asked about Alford's new job. "But it's pretty incredible to think he's found his way to Pauley Pavilion and through some of the Martinsville connections as John Wooden."

UCLA is never far from Alford's thoughts.

He got off to a rough start, being criticized for the way he left New Mexico so soon after accepting a new contract with the Lobos and he issued a public apology after getting a surprise grilling for the way he reacted to sexual assault allegations against one of his former players, Pierre Pierce, when he was coaching at Iowa.

Alford is no longer talking about those problems, opting instead to focus on adding another national championship banner to the 11 that already hang above the Bruins' home court.

Alford said forward-center Tony Parker has lost 18 pounds and guard Norman Powell has made big strides in the offseason. He's added size and more shooters to the roster during the offseason, and he's looking forward to coaching both of his sons next season, too, after playing and coaching with his father for so many years.

The biggest obstacle may be bringing fans inside.

"We sell a lot of season tickets, but there is so much to do in Los Angeles from the winter sporting events like the Clippers and Lakers and Kings and then you've got the beach," said Alford, who has worked and played primarily in smaller cities.

His job is to rebuild the image of UCLA basketball, which is still looking for a long-term successor to Wooden. Alford is not billing himself as that.

"I don't think you do that," he said. "There are certain people in our business that you don't replace -- Bob Knight, Dean Smith, Mike Krzyzyewski and you don't replace John Wooden, either. I think it's about understanding the excellence he created here. You walk into the library, you walk into a school building and you see (Wooden's) pyramid of success. He's meant so much more to the school outside of basketball, and I don't think there will ever be another coach with 10 national titles. You try to be yourself and understand the excellence."

Blue-and-gold? It's something Alford is getting used to.

"I thought about that the other day. You know I grew up being red and I've been all different colors through my coaching career. I never thought I'd be in black and gold and then I went to Iowa," he said. "But blue-and-gold is new and I like it."
