Predicting burglary patterns through math modeling of crime

ScienceDaily (May 31, 2012) ? Pattern formation in physical, biological, and sociological systems has been studied for many years. Despite the fact that these subject areas are completely diverse, the mathematics that describes underlying patterns in these systems can be surprisingly similar. Mathematical tools can be used to study such systems and predict their patterns.

One area where the study of pattern formation has been of growing interest is in crime modeling. It has been observed that criminal activity tends to cluster in space and time in urban settings. Analyzing spatio-temporal patterns of urban crime using mathematical modeling can reveal hidden patterns in the process of criminal activity, and potentially help establish methods for prevention.

The authors of a paper published this month in the SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis analyzed pattern formation as a model to predict burglaries. The rate of burglaries tends to be higher for houses that have been burglarized before or are close neighbors of those that have been burglarized. This leads to the creation of burglary hotspots. Authors Steve Cantrell, Chris Cosner, and Ra?l Man?sevich propose a model to generate patterns that would describe the specific location of such hotspots.

"Our research provides a mathematically rigorous way of connecting the geographical characteristics of a neighborhood [such as demographics, economics and ecology] to the patterns of burglary that would be seen in the neighborhood," says lead author Steve Cantrell. "Bringing geography into the model is an important step in understanding the model in realistic situations."

"Our work was inspired by models of burglary patterns that were developed by a group of mathematicians and scientists at UCLA," he goes on to explain. The UCLA group analyzed the dynamics of burglary hotspots based on the assumption that criminal agents strike based on a house's "attractiveness value."

The attractiveness value is a measure of how easily a house can be burgled without negative consequences for the burglar. Thus, when a house has been burglarized before, it increases the attractiveness value for the house and those nearby. Criminal agents move toward areas of high attractiveness values. If no additional burglaries occur in the vicinity, the attractiveness decreases.

Mathematical modeling of crime in general, and burglaries in particular, is based on the "broken window effect" or repeat victimization sociological effect, which implies that houses in areas of past burglaries have a higher chance of being burglarized.

Using two discrete models, one modeling the attractiveness of individual houses to burglars and the other modeling burglar movement, the authors of the UCLA study developed a continuum model based on a system of parabolic differential equations. Using this system as a starting point, the authors apply bifurcation theory, or the analysis of a system of ordinary di?erential equations under varying conditions, such as social or economic conditions of a neighborhood, to extend the scope of analysis. This paper expands on previous analyses and provides a general method to track social, economic or other conditions of a neighborhood over time.

ASUS throws up two more Computex teasers, hints at dual-OS and dual-side devices (video)

Image

After the rather vague teaser from three days ago, ASUS is back with two new videos to highlight its surprises at Computex next week. The first one comes with the tag line "All-in-one is no longer in one," with the money shot being the Windows 8 logo and the Android mascot showing up on two water droplets after they separated. This dual-OS and possibly dual-body concept reminds us of the Lenovo IdeaPad U1 Hybrid that never really materialized on the market (at the time of publishing this article, Lenovo's product page still embarrassingly says "This laptop is not available to purchase yet"), so we certainly hope ASUS won't fall into the same pit with its upcoming mysterious product.

The second teaser, titled "When two sides unite," features a suspended cardboard with "Tai" printed on the left of the white side, and "Chi" on the right of the black side. After a finger smears a dot of paint on the "i" on both sides, the cardboard starts spinning to show a flickering image of "Tai Chi." Our money's on a laptop with a dual-side touchscreen on the lid (the smearing being the hint for touch input), thus saving the need of extra mechanical parts to make a convertible device (and out goes the Eee Pad Slider). Ultimately it depends on whether the cost of such double-sided displays like LG's would be feasible for ASUS to realize this idea; or worse yet, this could be just a matter of slapping two display panels back to back à la Samsung SCH-W999, which might not make sense when you take both weight and cost into consideration. Well, we shall find out the truth in a few days. Check out the video clips after the break.

Rules and Other Factors for Auto Insurance Florida

home_insuranceYou must be aware of the auto insurance Florida standards that you must meet when finding insurance in the Sunshine State. Auto insurance is different from things like homeowners insurance Florida or other forms of insurance in that the standards that people inFlorida must meet are different from the standards used in other states.

You will need to meet the state?s minimum liability requirements in your auto insurance Florida policy. These requirements relate to the costs that your insurance policy can afford to pay when an accident happens with your car. You must have this managed so all people in a wreck will not be thrown into financial jeopardy.

You will have to have a policy that covers $10,000 in injury to a person in an accident that you may be involved in. You must also have a policy that involves $20,000 in coverage to two or more people in the same accident. A $10,000 minimum for property damage liability is also required. These rules must be used to help you out with keeping your car managed well.

You are not required to get uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage when you get insurance inFlorida. However, you must sign a declaration page from an insurance provider stating that you chose not to go with this kind of coverage in the event that you go against it. This is required because all car insurance companies that operate inFloridamust offer uninsured or underinsured coverage even to those who don?t want to get it.

One part of auto insurance Florida to see is thatFlorida is a no-fault state. You will be able to get your insurance to cover for your injuries and the injuries of others in a wreck because no one will officially be labeled as being at fault in an accident. However, this will keep you from having a right to sue people after the accident. This might be a hassle because it involves what might go on with regards to how you are managing money.

The last point to think about involves the quotes that you might get. You can find a variety of different quotes that involve many values. The thing about auto insurance quotes is that they aren?t like home insurance quotes that are often the same in many parts of the country.

The average quote that you can find on auto insurance can be very high. Car insurance can be worth about a thousand dollars a year on average inFlorida. This is a huge value that might make it harder for you to afford a policy if you are a poor driver with a bad driving history.

You may have an easier time with finding quotes by comparing quotes like you would with home insurance quotes. This includes checking with multiple companies to see what is open and then by contacting more providers with regards to the discounts and other things you could get. This might help you to find something a little more affordable or to at least tell you what you can do to make it cheaper over time.

You should consider the insurance policy that you are managing in Florida. Your auto insurance Florida plan must be reviewed with regards to what your policy must include and how it is going to work.

Ghostly gamma-ray beams blast from Milky Way's center

As galaxies go, our Milky Way is pretty quiet. Active galaxies have cores that glow brightly, powered by supermassive black holes swallowing material, and often spit twin jets in opposite directions. In contrast, the Milky Way's center shows little activity. But it wasn't always so peaceful. New evidence of ghostly gamma-ray beams suggests that the Milky Way's central black hole was much more active in the past.

"These faint jets are a ghost or after-image of what existed a million years ago," said Meng Su, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), and lead author of a new paper in the Astrophysical Journal.

"They strengthen the case for an active galactic nucleus in the Milky Way's relatively recent past," he added.

The two beams, or jets, were revealed by NASA's Fermi space telescope. They extend from the galactic center to a distance of 27,000 light-years above and below the galactic plane. They are the first such gamma-ray jets ever found, and the only ones close enough to resolve with Fermi.

The newfound jets may be related to mysterious gamma-ray bubbles that Fermi detected in 2010. Those bubbles also stretch 27,000 light-years from the center of the Milky Way. However, where the bubbles are perpendicular to the galactic plane, the gamma-ray jets are tilted at an angle of 15 degrees. This may reflect a tilt of the accretion disk surrounding the supermassive black hole.

"The central accretion disk can warp as it spirals in toward the black hole, under the influence of the black hole's spin," explained co-author Douglas Finkbeiner of the CfA. "The magnetic field embedded in the disk therefore accelerates the jet material along the spin axis of the black hole, which may not be aligned with the Milky Way."

The two structures also formed differently. The jets were produced when plasma squirted out from the galactic center, following a corkscrew-like magnetic field that kept it tightly focused. The gamma-ray bubbles likely were created by a "wind" of hot matter blowing outward from the black hole's accretion disk. As a result, they are much broader than the narrow jets.

Both the jets and bubbles are powered by inverse Compton scattering. In that process, electrons moving near the speed of light collide with low-energy light, such as radio or infrared photons. The collision increases the energy of the photons into the gamma-ray part of the electromagnetic spectrum.

The discovery leaves open the question of when the Milky Way was last active. A minimum age can be calculated by dividing the jet's 27,000-light-year length by its approximate speed. However, it may have persisted for much longer.

"These jets probably flickered on and off as the supermassive black hole alternately gulped and sipped material," said Finkbeiner.

It would take a tremendous influx of matter for the galactic core to fire up again. Finkbeiner estimates that a molecular cloud weighing about 10,000 times as much as the Sun would be required.

"Shoving 10,000 suns into the black hole at once would do the trick. Black holes are messy eaters, so some of that material would spew out and power the jets," he said.

Harappans may have lived, died by monsoon

Ancient Indus civilization shaped by seasonal rains

Web edition : Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

Climate change may have determined the fate of the ancient world?s most expansive civilization. A new study suggests that the waning of monsoons spurred both the rise and fall of the Harappans, who flourished in the floodplains of the Indus Valley thousands of years ago. ?

Small floods driven by the rains nourished the crops of early cities but proved unreliable generations later, researchers report online the week of May 28 in the?Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

?The Indus people were a Goldilocks civilization,? says Liviu Giosan, a geologist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts. ?They settled when the floods were just right, and then they disappeared when that window of opportunity disappeared.?

Giosan and his colleagues mapped the parts of western Asia inhabited by the Harappans using measurements made by the space shuttle Endeavour in 2000. An instrument onboard bounced radar signals off Earth?s surface and revealed subtle valleys, mounds and channels difficult to see from the ground, including the long-dry bed of a monsoon-fed river in desert that was once the heart of the Indus civilization.

Sediments unearthed and dated by the researchers showed a remodeling of the landscape over time. About 10,000 years ago, flooding rivers in parts of India, Pakistan and Afghanistan changed behavior as monsoon rains weakened. Instead of dumping loads of sediment that built up the land, the rivers began to cut out valleys.

New valleys next to increasingly mild rivers would have been fertile ground for human settlement. Starting about 5,200 years ago, cities sprang up in spots where small, regular floods would have watered farmlands.

?They were smart in picking sites with just enough water,? says Peter Clift, a sedimentologist at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and coauthor of the new study.

Conditions continued to dry, though, which would have made floods less frequent and therefore less reliable. That could explain why cities began declining about 3,900 years ago, says Clift. He and his colleagues report a trend toward smaller settlements developing after this time farther east, where monsoons are stronger.

But archaeologist Rita Wright of New York University cautions that blaming monsoons for the decline of the Harappans leaves out a very important element: the Harappans themselves.

?The Harappan farmers were well aware that the climate fluctuated,? Wright says. ?Over time, they developed a variety of ways to cope with their environment.?

Farmers in some cities might have found ways to deal with changing climate. Though the Indus people didn?t build irrigation systems like their contemporaries in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, they did cultivate a variety of different crops, some of which were more resistant to drought. They also raised animals for food and built massive water reservoirs.

To really understand how climate change played out in each city, says Wright, archaeologists will need to move beyond the big picture and dig up new clues.

Jury to hear No Doubt's claims against game maker

FILE - In this Sept. 25, 2009 file photo, Gwen Stefani, left, and Tony Kanal from the U.S. band No Doubt perform at the F1 Rocks concert in Singapore. A Los Angeles judge ruled Tuesday, May 29, 2012, that the band No Doubt can argue to a jury that gaming giant Activision misused their images in the game "Band Hero" and breached a contract and may have committed fraud by failing to tell that players could use their characters to sing other artists' songs. (AP Photo/Joan Leong, file)

(AP) ? No Doubt's attorneys can argue to a jury that the band was misled by gaming giant Activision Publishing Inc. about how its likeness would be used in the video game "Band Hero," a judge ruled Tuesday.

The ruling by Superior Court Judge Ramona See rejected a motion by Activision's lawyers to dismiss several claims from the case, including fraud, violation of publicity rights and breach of contract. See determined there were genuine disputes about evidence that a jury should consider.

No Doubt sued the Santa Monica, Calif.-based video game company in November 2009, claiming the band was never told that players would be able to unlock avatars of the band to perform other artists' music.

The case cited instances in which players could use singer Gwen Stefani to perform suggestive lyrics from the Rolling Stones' hit "Honky Tonk Women," or have a virtual version of bassist Tony Kanal sing his band's hit "Just a Girl," but with Stefani's voice.

The lawsuit claimed the feature turns the band "into a virtual karaoke circus act."

See denied on a technical basis a request for an injunction barring Activision from using band members' likenesses to perform other artists' work, although No Doubt could still pursue such an order if it wins at trial.

Activision has claimed the idea of "unlocking" unadvertised features of a video game has been around since the early days of the industry and the company did nothing wrong.

Attorneys expect the case will go to trial later this year.

Jeffery McFarland, who represents Activision, said the company has a strong defense and is looking forward to presenting it during trial. During the hearing, he said the company had a video recording of the band being told about the game's unlockable features.

The band's attorney Bert Deixler said the ruling "seemed inevitable" and noted No Doubt has repeatedly won the right to pursue the case, in both state and appellate courts.

?No issue how hard I attempted, it always appeared like I wasn?t going to amount to anything real important is obviously. And also this really sucked since I had a love for the better things. I wanted the gold Rolex, the nice looking overall Mercedes, as well as the Million-Dollar Mega Estate!

But when I looked inside the mirror, I just didn?t like what I saw. I was convinced the best life I wanted was merely a dream.

But that was all about to improve. Seriously- once I used to be 19, We had a brand-new Corvette. At 30, I had 2 brand-new Mercedes Benz cars. And at 21, I was the particular proud owner of an Rolls Royce Magical Spur!

By the time I switched 28? I just made over $100 Trillion in revenues. My spouse and i profited over $50 Trillion. I owned 2 homes- one of them was fourteen, 000 square feet and had the seven-car garage, a billiards room as well as a resort-style pool by having an underwater bar council! And I paid out cash for home use!

Within my garage, I had fashioned a red Lamborghini Diablo, the yellow Ferrari 360 Index, a white Bentley Arnage Red Tag, about 4 Mercedes, and a 12-passenger Lincoln Village Car Fango!

My checking account had over $10 Million within it. I got making $400, 000 in pay every few days. That fights in order to $80, 000 every day? or $10, 000 an hour or so! And the ones figures were basically worked 5 times a week for 6 hours every day, which I failed to!

Back in 2004 2002, My spouse and i made more money compared to the CEOs of Federal government Specific? eBay? Amazon online. net? Time Warner? Apple company Pc? McDonalds? Microsof company? Nike pas cher? Yahoo? Kia Motor Enterprise? Common Engines? as well as Goodyear Tire- BLENDED!

Yes-COMBINED.

Within the May 12th, 2003 matter, Forbes Magazine shown their top paid five-hundred CEOs in the us. Of the prominent and famous list of the five hundred CEOs, I built more money than 483 of those.

$17, 549, 000 MORE than the CEO associated with Starbucks.

$13, 030, 000 MORE than the CEO associated with Target.

$17, 240, 000 More than CEO regarding Motorola.

Today, this may many seem like I?m several rich (&zxc$3@) bragging about how exactly rich I will be? and you?re partly right. I am boasting! But more significantly, the main reason whiy I?m telling you about all of this is the course is around getting rich in a short time. When the talk of indecent money makes you really feel uncomfortable, or maybe even angers you actually, maybe you tend not to actually want to be wealthy.

The reason why I?m hinting about lots of the toys I had formed when I appeared to be just 28, is to prove to a person that if someone like me? with a learning impairment? an undesirable youth? and no formal education are able to get filthy rich by the time I used to be twenty eight? you could absolutely follow during my footsteps and make yourself your very own empire associated with wealth! inch Even Gary Halbert says, inches?? surprisingly, a lot of this information can be so electrifying; it was unknown even to me. inches Gary Halbert can be recognized around the world simply because America?s numero uno promoting authority.

Disney hopes Cars Land makes California Adventure a golden state

For more than a decade, Disney California Adventure Park has been putt-putting along in the slow lane, trailing its neighbor Disneyland in the race for big attendance numbers.

A new 12-acre expansion called Cars Land, set to be unveiled June 15, is the latest and by far biggest attempt to get the laggard theme park up to speed.

Based on the hit animated "Cars" movies made by Walt Disney Co.'s Pixar studio, Cars Land will include a racing convertible ride, square-dancing tractors and plenty of opportunities to buy themed merchandise.

It's the crowning effort of a $1.1-billion, multiyear attempt to turn California Adventure into a park where visitors will want to stay at least an entire day.

"I believe the completion will result in a park that will both stand on its own," Disney Chief Executive Robert A. Iger recently told financial analysts, "but also serve as an important and worthy neighbor to Disneyland."

The investment highlights the importance of theme parks as a powerful revenue engine for Disney. In the first three months of this year, parks and resorts generated nearly $2.9 billion, representing a 10% increase from the same period in 2011.

That strong performance helped Disney overcome a 12% drop in revenue from its movie studio division, which that quarter took a huge write-down from the disastrous "John Carter" flop.

Still, Disney's parks face aggressive competition in the race to create attendance-boosting attractions.

Universal Studios Hollywood last week opened a high-tech, 3-D ride ? estimated to cost $100 million ? based on the "Transformers" movies. Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia will debut a record 400-foot-tall drop-tower ride named for Superman's archenemy, Lex Luthor.

California Adventure has been an underperformer almost from the time it opened amid much hype in 2001. Visitors entered under a mock-up of the Golden Gate Bridge to the park that included a boardwalk-style roller coaster, river rafting ride and Ferris wheel, all themed to celebrate the culture and lifestyle of the Golden State.

What was missing, said many park guests as well as analysts, was Disney.

There was almost no trace of the studio's hallmark movie characters, such as Mickey, Goofy and Donald. And the high-tech wizardry that awed crowds at other Disney parks was mostly missing.

"The problem was that there was nothing iconic in that park," said Dennis Speigel, president of International Theme Park Services, a Cincinnati-based consultant to the industry. "Here is a company that knew how to build a spaceship but instead they built a Piper Cub" single-prop plane.

Over the years, attractions were added or adapted to Disney-fy the park more. One of the original rides, the Orange Stinger, was wrapped in a shell that looked like a giant orange. After a few years, the shell came off. The ride was redecorated with images of Mickey Mouse, and the name was changed to Silly Symphony Swings after an early Disney series of animated cartoons.

Two years ago, the park unveiled World of Color, an attraction that projects Disney movie scenes on hundreds of jets of water that shoot up from a man-made pool, highlighted by eruptions of fire.

Attendance still lagged. In 2010, California Adventure drew slightly more than 6 million visitors, while Disneyland welcomed about 17 million, according to estimates issued by the Themed Entertainment Assn. and the AECOM engineering and consulting firm. Disney does not release attendance figures.

To make matters worse, analysts said, many of those who visited California Adventure probably owned annual passes that gave them access to both parks. Disney had hoped visitors would spend a full day in each park and stay at a Disney hotel overnight. But pass holders such as Pam Wycliffe tend to visit California Adventure for only a few hours, diminishing the opportunities to sell them merchandise or food.

"I would only go for a handful of rides and then leave," said Wycliffe, a graphic designer from Novato, Calif.

Construction of the major overhaul and expansion of the park ? including Cars Land, a new entryway depicting 1920s Los Angeles and the already opened World of Color ? began in 2009.

KEEP YOUR MAYOR HOME ? Ask the LOCAL GOVERNMENT to DEFUND TRIPS to RIO for RIO+20!

Talk of the Sound wrote this article where they clarified that the Mayor of New Rochelle was not planning after all to attend the Agenda 21 Rio+20 conference. They had reported (certainly accurately) that Mayor Bramson was attending.? Apparently he changed his mind:

While it is our conclusion that a correction is not in order, we do want to make a clarification and we offer it here: Mayor Noam Bramson has stated that he was not aware of any such conference, never intended to go and never said publicly or privately that he planned to attend.

I think activists in New Rochelle and other cities, counties and towns need to ask their municipal leaders:? Are anyone going to attend Rio+20 on behalf of our community?? Regardless of the answer, ask them to defund the travel budget for this event.? There?s other needs in the community to fulfill:? Schools, roads, traffic lights etc.? It?s unconstitutional for a local official to attend anyway.? Starve the beast!

Philanthropy Front and Center-Atlanta: 2012 Digital Giving Index ...

Online giving platform Network for Good just released their Digital Giving Index update for the first quarter of 2012, which includes trends and analysis for $25 million in donations to more than 200,000 charities. This includes donations to Network for Good?s nonprofit customers through their own websites, and to other nonprofits through more than 35 corporate partner websites and Network for Good?s two giving portals,?www.NetworkforGood.org and www.SixDegrees.org.

Logo

The Digital Giving Index shows information on changes in online giving, breakdown of donation dollars, and average gift size by channel. Giving channels in the study include: individual charity websites, charity portals, social giving (peer-to-peer) websites, and applications.?Major takeaways:

Online giving increased across all channels in Q1 of 2012, and total online giving rose 16%.

  • Charity Websites donations across generic (doesn?t look like the nonprofit?s website) and branded charity websites saw growth at 12% and 36% respectively.
  • Portal Giving grew 3%. This was in line with expectations of modest growth since portal giving usually keeps a steady pace.
  • Social giving saw an increase of 20%. This includes giving events (giving challenges and cause marketing campaigns), and personal fundraising campaigns where individuals may ask family or friends to support their favorite charity.

Most charitable giving through the Network for Good platform happens via charity websites, followed by social giving and portal networks.

  • Giving through charity websites continues to make up over 60% of total dollars raised in 2012, holding onto the title of most popular giving channel for yet another quarter. It fell only slightly to 65% from 68% over the same period in 2011.
  • Social giving in 2012 continues to stay steady around 20%, but is expected to increase since peer-to-peer giving is gaining in popularity.
  • Portal giving is remains around 10% ??not much of a change from 2011. This number does not take into account the month of December or large scale natural disasters, during which portal giving can reach 25% of giving.

Branded pages still see larger and more frequent donations than their generic counterparts.?

Average gift size grew for both generic and branded donation pages in Q1 of 2012, however average gifts on branded donation pages tend to be around 20% larger than on generic donation pages ($104 v. $82). When charities produce a donation experience for their supporters that reinforce and solidify their brand, their average gifts increase over time.

Gift sizes continue to increase for portal giving, and have increased dramatically for social giving.

The dollar amounts contributed through portal giving increased by $10 (still excluding natural disasters), from $94 in the first quarter of 2011 to $104 in the first quarter of 2012. Witn the exception of natural disaster response, portal giving donations are usually made by donors that want to manage all of their charitable giving in one place.

The average gift size of social giving for Q1 of 2012 grew by 90% since 2011. Social fundraising is characterized by lower dollar gifts, but the size has been gradually growing from just under $40 in Q1 of 2010 to $100 in Q1 of 2012. This shows that event-based personal fundraising is on the rise; family and friend connections are proving to make social giving a viable alternative.

These are just the highlights from the first quarter report, so be sure to check it out for yourself?to get the full set of statistics and insights!

Texas Students will be tracked via chips in IDs

Francisco Vara-Orta

May 26, 2012

Northside Independent School District plans to track students next year on two of its campuses using technology implanted in their student identification cards in a trial that could eventually include all 112 of its schools and all of its nearly 100,000?students.

District officials said the?Radio Frequency Identification System (RFID) tags would improve safety by allowing them to locate students ? and count them more accurately at the beginning of the school day to help offset cuts in state funding, which is partly based on?attendance.

Northside, the largest school district in Bexar County, plans to modify the ID cards next year for all students attending?John Jay High School,?Anson Jones Middle School and all special education students who ride district buses. That will add up to about 6,290?students.

The school board unanimously approved the program late Tuesday but, in a rarity for Northside trustees, they hotly debated it first, with some questioning it on privacy?grounds.

Analysis: Big M&A banks move down-market in hunt for fees

(Reuters) - The slow market for merger deals is driving big-name investment banks into combat with smaller rivals for business from companies they usually ignore.

Goldman Sachs Group Inc , Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan Chase & Co have emerged as the top banks on middle-market merger and acquisition deals announced this year, displacing advisory shops that specialize in the area.

Bankers at smaller firms said some clients are flattered by the attention they are getting from banks that have avoided them for years, and occasionally use the competition to negotiate lower fees.

"It's a big challenge for us when those big brands come down market," said Christian Schiller, head of middle-market banking at Cascadia Capital LLC in Seattle.

The eagerness of so-called bulge-bracket firms to provide advice on acquisitions under $500 million illustrates how tough the investment banking business has become. Despite bonus cuts and layoffs, the big banks still have hordes of bankers making annual salaries of $400,000 to $500,000 who have to earn their keep.

"It's pragmatic - some income is better than no income," said William Hickey, co-head of investment banking at Sandler O'Neill & Partners.

Eight of the 10 biggest investment banks in 2011 recorded a decline in overall fee revenue from an already weak 2010, and the pace of deal assignments in the first quarter continued to fall.

James Freeman, a 17-year veteran of Credit Suisse who now runs his own eponymous advisory shop, said that bankers at the big firms are chasing smaller deals to justify their high salaries but that returns are negligible.

"There's a big bank next to us on every deal we pitch, but it's not economical for them to be that far down market," said Freeman, whose company provides data on deal fees to Thomson Reuters and other data distributors.

If big firms are having trouble paying for high overhead in slow times, they should consider further job cuts, he suggested.

An executive at one large investment bank said that middle-market deals may not be big banks' sweet spot but they can be lucrative.

"You can earn very meaningful fees," said Marc-Anthony Hourihan, head of U.S. mergers and acquisitions at UBS AG .

Goldman and Morgan Stanley averaged fees of $2.5 million apiece on their middle-market assignments through May 1, while J.P. Morgan topped the fee rankings with an average of $3 million, according to data from Thomson Reuters and Freeman.

Those figures are a far cry from a bank's cut on a $10 billion deal, which averages about $35 million, according to the data. On large deals, the fee is usually split among two to four advisers. Spokespeople at Goldman, Morgan Stanley and J.P. Morgan declined to comment.

Banks representing buyers of companies generally get a fixed percentage of a deal's value. Fees are usually slightly lower for representing sellers, but banks often use "ratchet pricing" on those deals, which yields a higher fee if a company is sold above a predetermined value.

Bankers at the larger firms also say that their new focus makes sense since their big clients are pursuing smaller deals. Corporate executives today are being rewarded for conservative "bolt-on" acquisitions that expand product lines or sales rather than for hard-to-execute megadeals premised on squeezing out costs.

"It's difficult to find big targets that have good growth profiles," said Hourihan.

BORN OF NECESSITY

What no one disputes is that deal announcements have been shrinking in big and small categories alike. The number of announced deals valued at $500 million and higher fell 24 percent in the first four months of 2012 from the already weak period a year earlier, according to Thomson Reuters. Total value of the deals fell 32 percent. Middle-market deals are down 20.7 percent by number of transactions and 17.4 percent by total value.

By delving into smaller deals, the Wall Street giants have displaced some perennial specialty banks in the middle market. The advisory arms of KPMG and PricewaterhouseCoopers - the top middle-market advisers in the first four months of last year - have dropped to a tie at sixth place in 2012 thus far. They ranked number one and two in all of 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011, according to Thomson Reuters data.

A KPMG spokesman declined to comment, while a PWC spokeswoman said the company focuses on annual, not quarterly, rankings.

A senior banker at a boutique firm in New York said clients are taking notice of the competition.

His bank recently prevailed against Goldman, Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank and two smaller firms for an assignment advising a California-based financial company about a divestiture. The chairman of the firm then negotiated a 20 percent cut in the agreed-on "success" fee and a 50 percent retainer cut. "He said he'd give the business to a larger bank if we didn't go along," said the banker, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Ever-optimistic deal bankers late last year were forecasting a strong 2012 calendar spurred by excess cash on corporate balance sheets, the expiration of Bush-era capital gains tax cuts at the end of 2012 and the desire of private equity firms to do deals in case Congress raises taxes on their funds' gains.

However, volatile financial markets and very poor credit markets in the second half of 2011 halted deal activity. While conditions are improving and backlogs of potential deals are growing, cash-rich but risk-averse corporate executives and their boards are taking longer than expected to restart the acquisition process, bankers said.

As a result, bankers who have long specialized in smaller deals expect the competition to persist.

"When the business cycle slows, the bulge-bracket firms tend to go anywhere where they can print business," said Sandler's Hickey, whose firm specializes in the financial industry deals. "They'll go back up market when business picks up."

BARE-KNUCKLE MARKETING

The competition, meanwhile, has spawned some combative marketing. Boutique banks often complain that their bigger rivals use senior bankers to woo clients but that junior staff end up doing the actual work.

Some boutique banks are advising clients to demand the right to fire a big bank that staffs junior bankers on a deal.

On the other end, big banks are telling potential clients that specialty M&A shops are more likely to push a customer to consummate a sale or acquisition because they need the fee. One deal can cover a boutique banker's costs for a year.

Managing directors at big firms, for their part, are expected to generate $10 million of annual fees to justify their compensation, said Doug Schmidt, who runs Chessiecap Securities, which works on deals under $30 million that he says are too low to attract big banks.

Schmidt, who has worked at larger banks such as the now-defunct Drexel Burnham Lambert, uses his website to remind potential clients that big banks may not give clients the love they deserve:

"Goldman Sachs may be the best divestiture firm in the world, but the fees on even its small deals can make your head spin ... When business is slow some big banks may be tempted to reach down for smaller deals by deploying junior resources and relying on their brand to carry the deal through. But when they do, they often end up creating an unhappy client who feels like a second-class citizen."

The five stages of launching a successful Internet startup | Site ...

Every Internet startup goes through five distinct stages on the way to making money and succeeding. This article shows you how to identify and guide an Internet startup through each stage and succeed early.

Startups can be any type of enterprise ranging from a blog about baking, to an affiliate marketing website, to an eCommerce store. Whatever your startup does, it will go through the same five stages on the way to success.

Identifying and understanding each of these stages in your own business can help you to tackle the right business challenges at the right time.

If you are thinking about starting an Internet business, or have just started one, then it is likely that you already know that coming up with a good idea, and identifying a need or niche to fill is crucial - so I won't rehash that here.

Instead, I'm going to look at Internet startups from a different angle. I'm going to tell you what you "experience", what to look out for, and where to find more information once you've identified where in the business life-cycle your enterprise is.

1. Your Internet startup is launched

Once you've had your business brainwave and put in the sleepless nights putting everything together, building a website, researching the competition, learning about the market, it comes time to launch your business.

Characterized by: Lack of customers and traffic. Little to no revenue. Technical issues. Bugs. Procedural problems. Poor design. Poor implementation.

Strategy: At this point, you need to work hard to ensure that the visitor or customer experience is improved at an exponential rate. Recognize that it is often not possible to make a startup perfect out-of-the-box, and endeavor to eagerly take on advice and criticism in order to improve your business offering.

For a blogger this could mean, rethinking your writing style. For an affiliate marketer, this could mean offering more high quality content with less advertising. For an eCommerce site, this could mean upgrading to a better quality eCommerce shopping cart platform.

Further reading: In this early stage of your startup, everything should be about learning. Learn whatever you can. Follow people in social media. Read news articles. But, above all, learn from the practical experience of running your own Internet startup.

Here are some resources you'll find useful:

2. Your Internet startup is operational

With many if not most of the bugs ironed out, some more efficient procedures in place, and a bit of experience, you are ready to start operating in earnest.

Characterized by: Low traffic. Low income. Occasional bug fixes. Cosmetic improvements to the site.

Strategy: Reach out to your niche. Seek to make relationships with influential people in your industry. Make connections and strategic business alliances.

Often marketing directly to your customers can be too expensive for an early stage startup. It can be far more rewarding to connect with people who have greater trust and authority in the market and get them to evangelize your business.

3. Finding clients and building a revenue stream

With some decent industry connections and a bit of trust built up with some influential people, bloggers, entrepeneurs, journalists and news sites, you can start to market to your customers in earnest.

Characterized by: Low traffic. Low revenue. Frustration at inability to penetrate the market. Frustration at not being able to get sufficient coverage or generate "buzz".

Strategy: Marketing. Marketing. Marketing. Do everything possible to drive sales and revenue.

It's at this point that many startups close their doors because they didn't focus exclusively on building a solid stream of revenue. Without an income sufficient to meet your operational costs (yes, this applies to bloggers too) then your startup is not sustainable in the long run.

4. Nurturing and encouraging growth

If you have done a good job of marketing, advertising and promoting your Internet startup then you can shift the business marketing campaigns up a gear.

Characterized by: Increased revenue. Increased traffic. Potential technical problems - scalability, hardware, etc. Unsolicited coverage and social buzz.

Strategy: Marketing. Marketing. Marketing. Start diversifying your marketing strategy to include existing fans, followers and customers. Offer promotions, discounts and deals. Get into the news. Leverage previous successes to gain additional coverage. Build further trust and authority.

Improve and upgrade. It is likely that up 'til now you haven't had a moment to implement all the new features and system improvements the business needs. Now is the time. Invest income back into the business.

Scale, and grow.

5. Competing in the market

Arriving on the stage, you will be greeted by stiff competition in your market. It's likely that there are a few competitors none too happy that your growth has eroded their market share. This is where it gets fun...

Characterized by: Strategic business decisions. Competitive research and analysis. Focus on both existing customer or fan base as well as new opportunities for growth.

Strategy: Don't neglect the customers, readers, fans and followers who got you where you are. Don't diversify unless you know that you can continue to meet the needs of the people who constitute the livelihood of the business.

With one eye firmly on your existing customers, look around for growth opportunities and strategic moves that can help to out-compete other businesses in your industry.

Remember that no business is immune to change. Especially Internet businesses. If you don't continue to adapt and grow, your customers will eventually be drawn elsewhere.

Take a break. Take some family time. Celebrate a job well done. Then, get back to work.
